Application
Overall, the ELGA system comprises some ten stations, each with a different configuration. Some use a straight forward rotating base with a linear unit on top of the turntable for a simple transfer operation while others use a complete pick-and-place system involving a rotating base unit fitted with a lift unit on to which is mounted a linear unit carrying a rotating wrist and a gripper unit. The last item comprises an arrangement of four grippers aligned along a bar and capable of holding the heating element so that it is supported over its entire length.

German company ELGA relies on Parker Hannifin's 3D system for manufacturing flexibility.

Linear actuation based on pneumatics has become well-established as an automation technique applied to most production processes throughout manufacturing industry. Systems employing the technology are surprisingly accurate and the installations that are being devised are increasingly complex.
A system made up of 3D units was selected by the German company ELGA in the construction of a manufacturing line for heating elements. The line, based on manufacturing islands, had to be sufficiently flexible to deal with any new production that might be developed in the future. A key function was to have handling systems capable of removing an element from the last station of one manufacturing island and transferring it to the first station of the next.

Each welding and cooling cycle occupies 2.2 seconds and during that time, the station has to execute movements for grip, retract, lift, rotate through 180 degrees, extend, release and move back to the start position.
