Yaskawa’s MP940 sets a new standard for single or 1.5 axis applications. The MP940 provides solutions for applications that previously required expensive and often complicated controllers. The MP940’s modular design allows it to mount alongside any size Sigma II servo drive (0.03 – 55kW).
Together with simple to use icon based programming (Motion Works +), a range of expansion I/O modules, HMI’s (Human Machine Interfaces) and numerous motor/drive combinations, the MP940 offers a cost effective solution to many machine control problems.
Typical applications for the MP940 include:
- Point-to point positioning for rotary tables and linear actuators
- High speed synchronised indexing
- Roll feed
- Winding
- Registration
- Flying shear
- Total machine control
The MP940 has already formed the heart of cost effective motion solutions for the printing, metal forming, textile, machine tool, packaging and converting industries.
Total Machine Control - Winding
A textile machine winds pre-set lengths of material between pins in an indexed turret. Lengths are set via an HMI panel, which also monitors machine status, sets batch values and speeds. The master axis is driven by a Yaskawa V7 open loop frequency inverter and a standard AC induction motor. As each master axis revolution corresponds to one skein, the winding arm has to be geared at a pre-set ration corresponding to the skein length. Once wound, the turret indexes 600 to allow winding to continue on the next set of pins. The completed length is then labelled, cut and finally ejected from the machine. The index must occur between pins so product tension is maintained and mechanical collision avoided.

The MP940 directly controls the motion of the winding arm and uses discrete I/O to control the motion of the two axes. The master axis is fitted with an encoder to provide positional information relative to a master reference position. The signal is then used to accurately gear and drive the skein winding arm synchronised to the speed of the main axis, using a Yaskawa Sigma II servo drive. The turret axis uses a Sigma II motor, drive and NS600 indexing application module. The above motion control together with the PLC logic capability of the MP940 means that this is the only controller required on the entire machine.
