Episode 5: Automation of systems for mixing and measuring medicines

THE DATA COURIER
Omron RFID application stories

There is a frequent problem when using written instruction sheets (paper) as this leads to mixing errors due to amended data not being used or even the misplacement of the documents. Changing the system to accommodate new products is extremely difficult particularly if the process has many stages.

The solution to this problem is at the start of the process have written to ID Tags mounted to the pallets information for each process about the product and mixing required, then add the specified weight of each substance needed from the medicine tanks. Next, as the product moves forward write the mixing result (i.e., the weight) to the ID tags and then read this information in the inspection process to check the actual weight of the contents.

The result of implementing automated mixing instructions gives reliable measurement, helps prevent mistakes and also waste disposal costs can be significantly reduced. The reliable mixing and quality control process has the extra benefit making it very easy to maintain history management. There is another important saving in that products with an incorrect weight are not delivered therefore cutting logistics costs as well as contributing to better customer relations. Finally there is a data processing time saving because unlike systems based on paper and bar codes, downloading data each time from the host is unnecessary and so product additions can be handled simply by rewriting the data in the ID tags.

The important features of units chosen for this system is use of the PFA (Teflon) tags which have high resistance to the environment and bacteria and can withstand the pallet crucially important sterilisation process. The tags are resistant to temperatures of up 110°C (230°F) and can therefore withstand thermal cleaning and IPA cleaning.
