The Delta Tau PowerPMAC motion controller sets new standards for accuracy, speed and overall performance putting them years ahead of the competition. Indeed, it could be said that the PowerPMAC has unparalleled computing power to maximise productivity while anticipating trouble.
This embedded controller is perhaps better described as a motion computer than a motion controller being founded on a Power PC processor with double precision floating point capability. Comparing this with conventional products shows the new controllers can give speed increases of up to 100%, while providing the platform for up to an amazing 32 axes and 32 co-ordinate systems.
Furthermore, versions with dual-core processors will shortly be added to the range allowing trajectory control and motion control which will be handled by separate cores, leading to still further speed gains.
The PowerPMAC controllers carry the proven technological pedigree of Delta Tau’s renowned UMAC product range. The key features inherited from UMAC controllers include parabolic S-curve acceleration ramps to give smooth motion and a ‘look-ahead’ facility through which motion blocks are identified in advance and hence allow automatic deceleration to negotiate tight cornering. This is of course is a useful feature for machine tools, laser cutting and other controls where geometric paths are followed. However the new controller with its invaluable velocity ‘look-ahead’ feature is now also complemented by ‘acceleration & Jerk look ahead’ which allows even greater performance gains to be achieved.
The PowerPMAC provides PCI, USB and Ethernet connectivity as standard and for users to get the best from its programming there is high-level C, making use of a proprietary high-efficiency maths library. Further benefits of this controller are their inclusion of open architecture and Linux-based real-time operating system that offers sub-microsecond response times for interrupts.
