Kollmorgen has expanded its iron core direct drive linear (IC DDL) motor range with models now rated up to 480V AC. Unlike most linear motors, which are restricted to lower voltages, the IC DDL can connect directly to 400/480V systems. This makes it a stand-out choice for engineers seeking seamless integration with global power supplies and greater design flexibility.
High Voltage, High Performance
Running at higher voltages allows the IC DDL to deliver its rated force at higher speeds, making it ideal for demanding motion applications. It also reduces current draw, meaning engineers can specify smaller drive amplifiers and lighter cabling, simplifying cabinet layouts and reducing overall system costs.
Compact Power and Precision
The iron core design strengthens the magnetic field to maximise force output, with continuous forces up to 8,211N and peak forces up to 13,448N. Low cogging ensures smooth, controlled performance, while a high motor constant reduces thermal losses. For ultra-smooth, cog-free applications, an ironless variant is also available.
Dynamic Motion Capabilities
Based on permanent magnet, three-phase brushless servo technology, the motors achieve speeds from less than 1 μm/s to over 5 m/s, with acceleration up to 10G on smaller models. This makes them well suited to industries such as machine tools, semiconductor manufacturing, battery production and automation, where rapid, precise positioning of heavy loads is critical.
Optimised for Global Use
By supporting 230, 400 and 480V operation, the IC DDL range eliminates the need for step-down transformers in high-voltage environments, while also covering the majority of global power standards across the UK, Europe, North America and Asia. A water-cooled option is also available, boosting continuous force output by up to 60% for even greater power density in a compact footprint.
