PCMM – Motion Controller

The PCMM™ programmable motion controller delivers a small yet powerful and cost-effective hardware platform ideally suited for modular or stand-alone machines that want the maximum in flexibility and performance.

The Motion controller is programmed using Kollmorgen Automation Suite’s (KAS) Integrated Development Environment (IDE) and is plug-and-play compatible with Kollmorgen’s broad range of motion control solutions.

Description

PCMM Motion Controller: Powerful Motion Controller in Small Package

The PCMM is a high-performance standalone motion controller designed to deliver precise, scalable, and fully integrated machine control for modern automation systems. Engineered for demanding industrial applications, it combines advanced multi-axis motion control, PLC functionality, and seamless network integration into a compact and flexible platform suitable for a wide range of machine architectures.

Built around an EtherCAT master architecture, the PCMM enables fast, deterministic communication with servo drives, I/O systems, and other automation devices. This ensures highly synchronised motion performance and accurate coordination across multiple axes, supporting complex machine processes with exceptional repeatability and stability. Depending on configuration and system requirements, the controller can manage 20 or more axes, making it suitable for both compact machines and highly complex, multi-axis systems.

The PCMM includes a fully featured IEC 61131-3 soft PLC environment, providing compatibility with all standard industrial programming languages. This allows engineers to develop control logic using familiar tools and methodologies while maintaining full flexibility in machine design. Motion control can be implemented using either PLCopen standard function blocks or Kollmorgen’s PipeNetwork™ motion programming environment, enabling both conventional and advanced application-specific motion strategies.

To simplify commissioning, diagnostics, and maintenance, the PCMM incorporates an embedded web server that provides convenient browser-based access to machine status, configuration tools, and diagnostic information. This reduces downtime and streamlines service operations by enabling remote monitoring and support without requiring dedicated software tools.

The controller is fully integrated within the Kollmorgen ecosystem, supporting Kollmorgen Automation Suite™ for unified programming, testing, and commissioning. It also works seamlessly with Kollmorgen Visualization Builder™ for HMI development, enabling efficient integration with AKI operator panels and other visualization solutions.

For reliable operation and efficient machine management, the PCMM includes onboard non-volatile memory for secure data retention and an SD card interface for backup, recovery, and rapid machine cloning. Integrated digital I/O is provided for basic control functions, with additional expansion capability available through external I/O modules to accommodate more complex system requirements.

Designed for plug-and-play compatibility, the PCMM integrates effortlessly with Kollmorgen servo drives and motors, including AKM® and CDDR™ technologies. This tight system integration helps reduce engineering effort, improve performance optimisation, and accelerate machine development cycles.

Overall, the PCMM delivers a powerful combination of performance, flexibility, and integration, making it an ideal control solution for machine builders seeking advanced motion control with streamlined engineering and robust system scalability.
