Motorized Lead Screws (MLS, MLN)

Thomson stepper motor linear actuators combine a hybrid stepper motor and a precision lead screw in one compact envelope. Our stepper motor linear actuators are now offered in two basic configurations – rotating screw (MLS) and rotating nut (MLN).

Thomson’s Stepper Motor Linear Actuators ingeniously blend a hybrid stepper motor and a precision lead screw into a single, compact unit—referred to as a motorized lead screw. This integrated design reduces part count and simplifies integration while delivering robust and precise linear motion.

Available Configurations

Thomson offers two main configurations to fit differing design requirements:

  • Rotating Screw (MLS):
In this design, the stepper motor drives the rotation of the lead screw. The load, mounted to the lead nut, is translated linearly as the screw turns. Ideal for systems with reliable external guidance, such as linear rails or bearing supports.
  • Rotating Nut (MLN):
Here, the nut rotates within the motor body, causing the lead screw (and the load) to move linearly. This configuration is perfect for applications where the screw must remain stationary or where motion is needed on either side of the actuator.

Enhanced Capabilities with Optional Encoders

To enable precise control, all actuators can be equipped with Rotary Encoders as a standard option. These provide real-time feedback on position, speed, direction, and additional motion parameters—empowering closed-loop control and enhancing system reliability.

Customization for Unique Application Needs

Thomson routinely collaborates with OEMs worldwide to tailor actuator solutions that meet specialized performance or packaging requirements. Customization capabilities include motor sizing, lead screw lengths and materials, nut configurations, and encoder options—ensuring optimal fit and function for your application.

Why Choose Thomson Stepper Motor Linear Actuators?

Compact and Efficient Design:
By engineering the motor and screw together, Thomson delivers a streamlined actuation solution with reduced footprint—ideal for space-constrained systems.

Simplified Integration:
The "open architecture" models (MLS and MLN) offer flexibility for applications with external guidance. Alternatively, the “closed assembly” (motorized lead screw actuator) streamlines design further by embedding guidance and motion components into one unit.

Applications

Thomson’s motorized lead screws serve diverse industries, including—but not limited to:

  • Medical & Diagnostic Equipment (e.g., fluid pumps, syringe systems, diagnostic positioning)
  • Precision Motion Systems like X–Y positioning stages and 3D printing platforms
  • Industrial Automation Components such as valves, pipetting devices, and CNC equipment
  • Other applications where compact, precise linear motion is essential: packaging, scanning systems, clean energy devices, aerospace control mechanisms, machine tools, and more
